Back in the Mix

October 14, 2014

My church recently (past year) switched over from an analog main console to a digital mixer. There are many benefits to having a digital mixer from the on-board processing to the ability to save and recall session or even working on sessions off-line (on a computer away from the sanctuary) and uploading it prior to a service. However, I believe the main benefit of having a digital Front of House (FoH) mixer is the ability to record each track individually. While that may not matter very much for a two track recording of the Pastor’s sermon tge ability to record separate tracks definitely matters during a 40 piece concert or even during song service which uses an 8 member praise team and 12 input band. Mobile Streaming vs Desktop Streaming

November 27, 2013

I recently complete an edit for a client in which he recorded a few video segments for his health and nutrition business. Everything appeared fine on local playback so I uploaded it to Youtube for him to approve. Imagine my surprise when he emailed me to let me know there was something wrong with the audio. I listened to my local copy again and admitted there was a quite a bit of wind noise when it was originally recorded so I tweaked the audio and uploaded it again. And again I received the same complaint: bad audio. Read the rest of this entry ?

Digital Age

August 25, 2013

The move to digital audio mixing has come along in a trickle, to say the least. Not that digital mixers haven’t been available for over 2 decades but it has taken a while for them to be at a price point that people can accept. There was also the issue of fear about the complexity of installation and operation that comes with a digital board. I think PreSonus has done a great job of taking care of both of those issues with their line of digital mixing consoles. Read the rest of this entry ?

Proper Sound Reinforcement

August 15, 2013

SpaceAge Consulting not only does Video Production and Editing but we also provide Audio Engineering for live and studio applications as well as Audio consultation. One of my favorite aspects of my job is to work with Churches on improving and installing their audio systems. I have been blessed to work with many churches on making minor and major improvements to their sound systems. However, over the years I have noticed a few common themes with church sound systems: there is no long term plan…. Read the rest of this entry ?

Audio Engineering

August 7, 2013

It’s been a long time since I spoken on any Audio Engineering or consultation that I have done since my installation in a church in West Virginia but Audio is still a good part of my daily life especially when shooting with a DSLR. Audio is still considered to be as important if not more important than video. With that in mind I have been looking at upgrading my daily audio gear from a Zoom H1 to something a little more robust. After I narrowed my choices by price and features I ended up comparing the Zoom H4n and the Tascam DR-40. Read the rest of this entry ?

Wireless Mic (Quick Hit)

June 21, 2012

http://www.woot.com/offers/handheld-microphone-system

So Woot is selling a UHF wireless mic for $69 ($5 shipping included) and I thought I would bite to at least test it out. Don’t be fooled by the $159 “list price” because Amazon and B&H are selling it for around $100. A UHF wireless mic for under $75 is tempting as a wireless mic usually goes for 4 times that amount.
When it comes to audio equipment the saying “You Get What You Pay For…” usually holds true; though B&H has 36 UHF wireless mics for under $100 it is very rare to find top notch microphone of any quality in that price range. However, since there are no reviews on this product that I can find from a dealer I trust I am willing to take one for you guys and test this mic out for myself. Stay tuned.

Swann Freestyle HD Action Cam

June 7, 2012

I love the versatility of an action cam, not that *I* do anything you see in the GoPro commercials, but action cameras give you the ability to capture footage in a way that might be hard for other cameras. As I mentioned before I’ve been looking for an action camera so that I can take shots from unique angles and view points and I had been looking at a few models: GoPro Hero and Hero2, Swann Freestyle HD and a Contour Roam.  When I compared price, features and accessories I decided to start with the Freestyle HD; for the lowest price it comes with the most accessories in the box.
